Upwork fee calculator — what you keep after the fee.
Upwork’s freelancer service fee is variable — 0% to 15% per contract, set contract by contract. Enter the take-home you want and your contract’s fee, and get the exact amount to quote. (Still seeing “Upwork takes 10%” elsewhere? That’s the pre-May-2025 flat rate — it’s stale.)

What should actually land in your pocket from this contract, before tax.
Upwork sets this per contract — it’s shown on your offer and in your contract details. It is not a flat 10% anymore.
How Upwork’s variable fee actually works
One platform, many possible fees. Here is what decides yours — and what each percentage does to a $1,000 target.
The Freelancer Service Fee, explained
- The range is 0%–15% of your earnings on each contract, including bonuses. Upwork sets the percentage contract by contract, based on factors it describes as supporting a balanced and competitive marketplace — it does not publish the exact formula.
- You see your fee before you commit. The percentage is shown when a client sends you an offer or when you submit a proposal, and it appears in your contract details and transaction history.
- Once a contract starts, its fee is locked. It will not change mid-contract, even if Upwork adjusts fees on new contracts later.
- It covers hourly, fixed-price and Project Catalog work the same way — the fee is per contract, not per contract type.
- Older contracts differ: contracts started before May 1, 2025 ran on the previous flat 10% fee, and a small number of special programs (such as Direct Contracts or enterprise arrangements) carry their own rates.
- Budget for extras separately: bidding costs Connects ($0.15 each), and the optional Freelancer Plus membership is a separate subscription — neither is part of the service fee above.
Because the fee is set per contract, two freelancers doing similar work can pay different percentages. Run the numbers with the fee on your contract. If you haven’t been offered a contract yet, 10% is a reasonable planning midpoint — directional, not a promise.

| Your fee | Quote this | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | $1,052.63 | $1,000.00 |
| 10% | $1,111.11 | $1,000.00 |
| 15% | $1,176.47 | $1,000.00 |
At 15%, Upwork’s cut of that quote is $176.47 — and tax then comes off what’s left. Quoting $1,000 flat to “earn $1,000” leaves you $850 before tax, not $1,000.
Rule of thumb: wanted take-home ÷ (1 − your fee) ÷ (1 − your tax rate) = the rate to put in the proposal.
Fees are only the first cut. The full solver also grosses up for payment charges and your tax rate, then round-trip checks the result.

Questions, answered
The questions freelancers actually search for — with the numbers, not vibes.
How much does Upwork charge freelancers?
A variable Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork has charged this way since May 1, 2025: it sets the percentage for each contract individually, shows it to you before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and locks it for the life of that contract. Contracts started before May 1, 2025 used the previous flat 10% fee.
Why do so many calculators still say Upwork takes 10%?
Because 10% was the fee — a flat rate that applied to every contract until May 1, 2025. Many fee pages and calculators were written before the change and never updated. Planning with a stale 10% is risky in both directions: if your contract actually carries 15%, quoting to keep $1,000 ($1,111.11) leaves you with just $944.44.
Where do I find my contract’s exact fee percentage?
Upwork shows the percentage when a client sends you an offer and on the proposal screen before you submit. After a contract starts, it’s in your contract details and on every transaction in your transaction history. Use that exact number in the calculator above — not a guess, and not the old 10%.
How do I work out what to quote on Upwork?
Divide, don’t add: quote = take-home ÷ (1 − fee). To keep $1,000 at a 15% fee, quote $1,000 ÷ 0.85 = $1,176.47. At 10% it’s $1,111.11; at 5%, $1,052.63. If you also need to cover tax, divide once more by (1 − your tax rate) — the full solver on the homepage does both steps and shows the round-trip check.
Does my Upwork fee ever change mid-contract?
No. The percentage is fixed when the contract starts and stays the same for that contract’s whole life, even if Upwork changes fees for new contracts later. The flip side: your next contract can carry a different percentage, so check the fee on every new offer before quoting.
